Airplane Wreck

The airplane wreck is located at Sauðanes, Langanes, where the old airport used to be. The plane has been there since 1969, a Douglas DC-3 (R4D-S) of the United States Navy. The pilot Russell W. Sims Jr, Executive Officer of NAS Keflavik, was flying in supplies and mail when cross winds and unimproved runway surface made the landing very difficult. The plane was damaged beyond economic repair during landing. In 1996 it's wings were removed and sent to the south of Iceland.

The plane wreck has been a shelter for the sheep in Sauðanes through the years when the weather is bad. When you visit the wreck, please respect the landowners wishes, walk up to the plane and respect birdlife.
