Frakkagil and Þjófaklettar
In Þistilfjörður there is a small canyon that is called Frakkagil or French-Canyon and cliffs that are called Þjófaklettar or Thief-Cliffs. History claims that people in Þistilfjörður hanged french sailors who they suspected of stealing their sheep. Apparently the french sailors were seen herding the sheep to their boat. That's when farmers gathered a group of men who caught the sailors and took them to the canyon where they were hanged.
From the ring road it's a short walk to the canyon. You park the car somewhere near the farm Brekknakot and of course it's general courtesy to ask permisson from the landowner. It's also possible to walk from the old road on Öxarfjarðarheiði.
